The Calgary Paramedic's Charity Society was formed in 1989. Paramedics have a great community spirit and the very nature of their work is helping people. Through the Society we can contribute back to this great city, in a positive and financial way. Membership in our Society is limited to employees of EMS or retirees.

We started out with 250 tickets, collecting about $2800 / year for charity. Today, we have over 1400 tickets sold and collect around $16,000 for charity each year. Our goal when choosing a Charity is to have some connection with us and our work that we do.

We have done many special projects over the years including the EMS Action Albums, The EMS Museum Ambulance and the design of the EMS Colouring Books.

As the Society grew the challenge to keep up with our commitments became obvious. Today the board of directors consists of five dedicated volunteers, who freely give their time to our Society. The following is a list of Charities we sponsor and a brief explanation on each.

EMS Colouring Book

This book was implemented and designed by Charity Society members, the PR officer at EMS and a graphic designer from the City. The initial starts up costs were shared and we now contribute yearly a set amount for reprinting costs.

Salvation Army

Each year we contribute to this cause, via the Calgary Sun Sunshine Fund. They ensure that the funds are directed to those most needy.

Dedication Rooms

This program started in 1997 and is our way to remember one of our own, should they meet an untimely death. In consultation with the family, we choose a room usually at a hospital and furnish the room along with a plaque dedicating the room to that member's memory and family. This has been very well received at all levels but especially to the family involved. To date we have six rooms dedicated:

  1. The Rejean Denis Room -rededicated in 2000
  2. The Ralph Reynolds Entertainment Centre at the RockyView Hospital
  3. The Colin Orton Family Room at the Foothills Hospital
  4. The Gerry Stone Family Room at the Peter Lougheed Hospital
  5. The Doug Mcleay Break Room at EMS Headquarters
  6. The Richard Osborne room at the Rockyview Hospital

Kids Cancer Camp

We help this group send kids with Cancer to summer camps by sponsoring four golfers in their tournament each year.

Helmet Give Away

We started this program because we were seeing far too many accidents on bicycles where no helmets were being worn. This program has evolved from giving helmets away on the bike pathways to now attending schools and giving safety talks as well as providing helmets for those kids most in need. The evolution came about when the government brought in the mandatory use of helmets in those under 17 in late 2002.

Diakonos House

This is a new program for 2002 that assists various Emergency personnel during time of crisis in their lives.

Mustard Seed

Starting in 2002 we now assist the Mustard Seed in aiding the homeless in our City. The homeless problem unfortunately, is only growing as our city expands. We have various programs that we support through this organization.

Once any Charity we sponsor has reached $25,000 in donations they are replaced by another Calgary Charity that needs our help. The need in Calgary is great and is was with much soul searching that we decided to move on once this milestone has been reached.

Our past Charities have been:
Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured (ARBI).
Kids Cancer Camp
Mayor's Food Drive

The current boards of directors for the Charity Society are:
Mike Cochrane, Trent Snyder, Stu Campbell, Tony Kendall, and João Amat

Many thanks to past directors:
John Hein
Georgia Johnstone
Ken Morrice
