Paramedics earn lower hourly wages than other city employees. That’s why paramedics are simply asking to be treated like other city workers.

A paramedic with 3½ years of education works 42 hours a week and earns $27.30/hour after 4 years of service.

By comparison, a city employee who provides protective services for Calgary Transit earns $33.44 after 4 years, and works 35 hours a week. We believe other city employees are paid fairly, and we support that. But hour for hour, paramedics’ wages are not keeping pace.

The basic pay for a Calgary Paramedic is $60,000 a year without overtime or premiums.

Our comparatively low hourly and annual wage has caused serious recruitment and retention problems for Calgary EMS. As a result of staff shortages, paramedics work many hours of overtime each year. The City includes that overtime when they calculate our average earnings. Despite long hours and chronic short staffing, Calgary Paramedics work diligently to maintain quality services for Calgarians who need emergency services.

The City claims it values its paramedics. It is time to reflect that value in wages.

EMT-P employees are trained in Advance Life Support. This certification requires 3 ½ years of training. The starting wage rate for an EMT-P is 23.74 for an annual wage of $51,848. After 23 years the wage rate for an EMT-P is $30.26 for an annual wage rate of $66,087.

Calgary Paramedics received their last wage increase in late December 2004.

Calgary Paramedics are not the second best paid in Western Canada as The City claims

Becoming a Paramedic takes 3.5 years of training at a cost of $20 - $25K to the employee
